Cemetery Hike

We live across the street from one of Oxford's most beautiful natural places - the cemetery!  So much open space that will never be filled up with condos.  We love hiking up its contours and running down them.  Roberts and I went skiing in the "back bowl" in the big snow of '11 before it was outlawed.  Though it may seem a bit creepy to take kids hiking in a cemetery, I find it to be a peaceful place to start the dialogue of what death is and what happens to people when they die.  We had to put our family dog, Sela, an almost 12 year old golden retriever, to sleep this past weekend.  During our hike, Winn found a dug up place and he told me that was where Sela died.  We actually had her cremated.  Before I had children I would bring Sela up to this cemetery after hours and she loved to run these hills.  I just got finished reading When Breath Becomes Air, a beautiful book on dying and what makes life meaningful.
Well, enough about mortality and death - I have to go pick up Winn from school.
